  ROCK ART IN AFRICA: World Heritage
The UNESCO World Heritage List includes 851 properties worldwide, forming part of the cultural and natural heritage that the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. These include 660 cultural, 166 natural and 25 mixed properties in 141 States Parties. As of November 2007, 185 States Parties have ratified the World Heritage Convention.

As of 2008, there are nine rock art sites in Africa on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It should be noted that UNESCO classifies nations in northern Africa as 'Arab states'. The List currently includes:
