Twyfelfontein (Namibia) inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List
The 31st session of the World Heritage Committee, sitting in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 28 June 2007 inscribed Twyfelfontein on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Twyfelfontein, or /Ui-//aes (Namibia), has one of the largest concentrations of rock engravings in Africa. Most of these engravings represent animals as well as human and animal footprints.
The property also includes six painted rock shelters. The objects excavated from two parts of the property, including stone artefacts, ostrich eggshell beads, and schist pendants, date from the Late Stone Age. The site forms a coherent, extensive and high quality record of ritual practices relating to hunter-gatherer communities in this part of southern Africa over at least 2,000 years. It also illustrates the links between the ritual and economic practices of hunter-gatherers. This property is Namibia's first World Heritage site.
