Lokori Community Rock Art Workshop

On 16 February 2010, TARA launched a three-day workshop in Lokori, Northern Kenya. The workshop participants came from four local areas; Lokori, Morulem, Lokubae and Elelea. The overall objective of the workshop was to create awareness on the importance of the rock art and other heritage in this area. TARA is striving to ensure that the community benefit from their heritage through responsible tourism and improved infrastructure, therefore enhancing the long-term conservation of the sites.

The community workshop was considered a success as the participants took a very active role in the programme and each of the four community groups developed work plans to raise awareness within the next two months. Four participants were selected for an exchange programme to two other TARA community rock art projects in Kenya: the Abasuba Community Peace Museum on Mfangano Island and Kakapel Monument.

The workshop was made possible through support from US Embassy State Department, the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation. The facilitators for the workshops were:

Dr. Cristine Ogola - Archaeologist , NMK
Jack Obonyo - Curator, Abasuba Community Peace Museum
Christopher Eregae - Community Mobiliser, World Vision
Terry Little - Chief Operations Officer, TARA
Gloria K. Borona - Manager, Community Projects, TARA
Ray Amolo - Accounts Assistant, TARA
Else de Kleine - Intern, Community Projects, TARA
